Video Cards
Video cards are referred to by many other terms such as a graphics accelerator
card, display adapter, graphics card etc. The purpose of the video card is
to generate images and output those images to a
display.
The video card is considered part of the hardware of the
personal computer.
The video card is a separate and dedicated expansion card which is inserted into
a slot on the computer's
motherboard,
as opposed to a graphics controller integrated into the
motherboard
chipset.
Other functionalities that are offered by some video cards are options such as
video capture, TV tuner adapter, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 decoding or even FireWire,
mouse,
light pen or
joystick
connectors.
Video cards are quite compatible with many devices and are not just exclusively
used in IBM type
PCs. Video cards can be used in devices such as
video game consoles.
